This past Saturday, eleven brave challengers came out to Washington Middle School to take on Slovenia’s seven-time Woman’s Chess Champion Jana Krivec, who is currently on vacation here in the Islands. Facing some of Hawaii’s best chess players, WGM Krivec won seven games, drew one and lost three.

Winners included veteran players Rob Keough and Fred Haley, as well as scholastic player Patrick F. Perry. Also, Dr. Bill Shea managed a draw.

The following picture hopefully will give anyone who wasn’t able to attend a sense of the spirit/mood of the event.

Mahalo to all of the players (and accompanying friends/family members/spectators) who came out for the simul! Also special thanks to Eric Floro, WMS’ chess coach for securing the venue and helping to organize the event. Coel Oshiro, UH Chess Club President, deserves thanks as well for helping with promotion and for managing the registration desk.

Of course, the biggest thanks goes to Ms. Krivec, who wowed all of us with her impressive play, kindness and grace. Aloha and mahalo, Jana!
