The Hawaii Chess Federation hosted its October 2026 Scholastic Open tournament on Saturday, October 24th, at Washington Middle School. The tournament, which consisted of six rounds of chess played at a time control of G/30+5 (30 minutes per player with a 5-second increment), included 107 student participants and 16 adult players.
After a long and exciting day of chess, there were a number stand-out performances: Renzo Tsu and Jaxon Choi from Punahou School tied for first in the K-8 Novice division with scores of 5.5; and we had a four-way tie for first in the K-12 Open division, with Kevin Ji from ‘Iolani School, Connor Lopez and Max Narimasu from Punahou School, and Noah Cheng from Assets School all scoring 5.0.
