2025 September Scholastic Sectional Tournament Report
The Hawaii Chess Federation hosted its 2025 September Scholastic Sectional tournament on Saturday, September 27th, at Washington Middle School. The tournament, which consisted of five rounds of chess played at a time control of G45 (45 minutes per player) with a 5-second increment, boasted over 100 student participants and a number of adult players as well.
After a long and exciting day of chess, there were multiple stand-out performances: Michael Tserennyam from Laie Elementary School won the K-2 division with a perfect score of 5.0; John Fergus from Punahou School won the K-5 division with a perfect scores of 5.0; Alphaeus Tse, from Waikiki Elementary School, won the K-8 division with a score of 4.5; and Ty Dutoit, from Punahou School, won the K-12 division with a perfect score of 5.0; and Eric Mui won the adult section with a perfect score of 4.0. In the team competition, first place winners included ‘Iolani School (K-2 and K-8) and Punahou School (K-5 and K-12).
