2025 October Scholastic Open Tournament Report
The Hawaii Chess Federation hosted its 2025 October Scholastic Open tournament on Saturday, October 18th, at Washington Middle School. The tournament, which consisted of six rounds of chess played at a time control of G/30+5 (30 minutes per player with a 5-second increment), included 65 student participants and six adult players as well.
After a long and exciting day of chess, there were a couple stand-out performances: Esmond Pang from ‘Iolani School won the K-8 Novice division with a perfect score of 6.0, playing in only his second rated tournament; J.P. Bennett from Punahou School won the K-12 Open division with a score of 5.5; and Eric Mui won the adult section with a perfect score of 5.0. In the team competition, Punahou took first place in the K-8 Novice division while ‘Iolani finished first in the K-12 Open.
Congratulations to our winners and to all participants for their hard work and dedication to chess! Our next tournament will take place on Tuesday, November 11th (Veterans Day), at Washington Middle School - we look forward to seeing you there!
